Fungal infections are obtained when invading fungus attacks a part of the body. When it takes over, it is too much for the immune system to tackle it. Just like any microbes, fungi can be helpful or harmful. When harmful fungi take over the body, they are difficult to kill because they thrive in an environment and re-infect the individual who is trying to get better.

Common symptoms are skin changes which include itching and redness, or even peeling and cracking skin. Fungal infections include Athlete’s Foot (Tinea Pedis), Ringworm (Tinea Corporis), Tinea Capitis, Onychomycosis, Tinea Versicolor (Pityriasis), Cutaneous Candidiasis. There is also a skin condition called fungal acne.

Do you have itchy bumps that do not go away? Or, do these bumps tend to worsen during the hot and humid season? Do you have breakouts on your chest, shoulders, or back that does not clear up?

You may be dealing with fungal acne.

Malassezia Folliculitis is caused by the overdeveloped yeast on the skin. These fungi oil-lovers usually appear in healthy human skin. But there are many factors that can cause to their overgrowths such as humid and hot conditions, oily or greasy skin, and immunosuppression. This can later infect hair follicle and cause the immune system to apply its defense – inflammation.

Fungal acne is a result of an overgrowth of fungi known as Malassezia Folliculitis (MF). A regular “acne” is a result of a bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes. They appear very similar outside, but they could not be more different.

The MF lesion bumps are usually smaller and have the same size, which is monomorphic. Regular acne is less predictable, and size ranges between 1 mm and 3 mm papules or pustules.

MF lesions are itchy and are aggravated after sweating/increased skin temperature. They grow around the T-zone, hairline, forehead, chest, and back where you have more oil gland activities.

However, both Malassezia and P. acne love oil very much. The overproduction of sebum is one of the main causes of acne, and this is common to regular acne (Acne Vulgaris) and fungal acne (MF).

How do you know the difference?

The best way to find out is by visiting a licensed dermatologist for a consultation. If in case, fungal acne is suspected, a dermatologist will scrape or extract a part of the lesion for examination using a microscope.

If you have been using acne treatments for a long time and they do not work or make it worse, most likely, you may have fungal acne. Again, the best way to determine your skin problem is by seeing your dermatologist.

Take note; fungal acne is contagious with close encounters with others.

Tea tree oil is extracted from the leaves of the Australian Melaleuca Alternifolia, tree. It is famous for its antifungal and antibacterial properties. Some research claims that tea tree oil can be used for treating fungal infections such as athlete’s foot, ringworm (body and scalp), and nail fungus.

This essential oil is known to treat skin conditions and symptoms, including problems on the nail and hair. The oil can also be used as a mouthwash, deodorant, or insect repellant. When tea tree oil is used in a topical form, it can also improve the overall appearance of the skin.

Uses of Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is used traditionally as a topical antiseptic and antifungal medication. A study claims that a dilution of tea tree oil with 5% benzoyl peroxide helps control symptoms of acne. It can also be effective with toenail fungus, and maybe with athlete’s foot. Other studies involving tea tree oil for other health conditions like dandruff, and gum disease are still ongoing and inconclusive.

Since studies on tea tree oil are ongoing, there is no particular dose given. The tea tree oil concentrations that are used in the studies vary depending on the medical conditions being studied. For example, tea tree oil gel with 5% concentration may be used for acne, while tea tree oil creams with concentrations of 10% or higher, may be used for athlete’s foot. The 100% solution of tea tree oil is commonly used with toenail fungus. If you intend to use tea tree oil, follow the instructions on the label, or better get the professional to advise from your dermatologist.

Take note that there are no natural food sources of tea tree oil and therefore, it should NEVER be swallowed or taken internally.

What makes an effective antifungal body wash?

The best and effective body wash should be powerful but gentle enough on your skin in killing the fungus. An effective body wash uses natural ingredients that help soothe and soften your body skin, remove any nasty body odors, and put off any fungus.

It should contain healthy essential oils such as tea tree oil and oregano that are famous for their potent antifungal and antiseptic properties, without bad side effects like several synthetic antifungal treatments are known for.

Also, look for an antifungal body wash that has ingredients that helps soothe your skin. Find body wash with natural moisturizers such as coconut, aloe vera, jojoba oil, and olive oil. Herbs such as rosemary and peppermint are also famous for their refreshing properties.

Avoid those products that are very strong and stringent because while they may kill any fungus on your skin, they can also break down the elasticity of your skin, leaving you with prevailing skin problems.
