11 Best Back Acne Treatment Products

Acne is a common skin problem among Americans. There are about 40-50 million Americans have acne at any time according to the American Academy of Dermatology.  It can cause blackheads, whiteheads, and even pus-filled spots.

back acne

Acne tends to begin during puberty, and most individuals experience this skin condition during this period before it resolves itself in the late teens period or during the early ’20s. For others, it persists to their 20’s and 30’s. The severity of the condition varies from a few spots to larger clusters of affected spots. It can appear on the back, neck, face, and chest. If this skin problem is not treated, dark spots and permanent scars can appear on the skin. Acne can come as blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts.

What are the causes of acne?

When hormone levels in the blood increase, the glands generate an excess of oil, dead skin cells can also clog up the follicles, and the combination of these two processes can result to the accumulation of excess oil. Thus blackheads and whiteheads appear.

We all have this bacteria known as Propionibacterium acnes thriving on our skin, and for many, it does not cause any problem. But the accumulation of excess oil on the skin with people prone to acne makes this bacteria to multiply. This will cause inflammation and growth of pus-filled or red spots.

The British Association of Dermatologists said that there was little evidence that some specific foods like chocolate can cause acne, but those foods high in certain carbs and sugar like white bread and potato chips.

Can we prevent back acne?

We cannot always control whether or not to get back acne because the major factors are ones that are out of our control: genetics and hormonal fluctuations. However, we can  manage and minimize our chances of getting future bacne lesions by:

  • Avoiding some medications including androgens (or male hormones) and lithium because they can increase our chances of getting acne. If you are taking any of these medications, consult your doctor about getting alternative treatments.
  • It is regulating the use of oil-based skin care products on your back like moisturizers, sunscreens, cosmetics, and other oily-products. These can cause acne flare-ups. Get skin care products that are labeled non-comedogenic. These products contain ingredients that do not promote blackheads.
  • Avoiding pressure on your back. If you are always carrying a backpack or wear sports equipment such as shoulder pads, take some time not wearing them because they place pressure on your back. Or,  try wearing a clean cotton tee shirt under it. Prolonged pressure and friction from these objects on your back can result in some types of back acne breakouts known as acne mechanica.

Healthy habits for healthier skin

Sweating is good.

It detoxifies the body without the juicing. Sweating can flush unhealthy substances from the body such as alcohol, cholesterol, and salt. Pores open up when you sweat and release the accumulated substances inside the skin. According to Dr. Adebola Dele-Michael, a dermatologist, “Sweat purges the body of toxins that can clog pores and plague the skin with pimples and blemishes.”

One of the causes of acne on your back and chest is from working out. Those tight clothes trap sweat and oil which can clog pores and hair follicles. This can result to back acne breakouts. Change your sweaty gym clothes immediately and give your body a shower. Use a body wash that contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to minimizes chances of breakouts and kill bacteria.

Apply moisturize lightly.

Unlike your face, other parts of your body do not need the same amount of moisturizer. Angela Lamb, a dermatologist, recommends applying moisturizer to your arms and legs, but lighter touch on your back and chest. These are areas that have more oil glands compared to your extremities, and they do not need more amount of moisturizer.

Change bed sheets regularly.

change sheets regularly

While you are sleeping, dead skin cells and body oils rub off on to your bed sheets. These accumulated oils and bacteria on your sheets may cause back acne breakouts. Skin professionals recommend changing and washing your sheets every week to minimize the amount of pore-clogging oils and bacteria your skin is exposed to. Do the same with your bras, pajamas, and towels. Anything that touches your skin should always be clean.

Try to avoid wearing spandex.

Those tight-fitting, synthetic materials such as spandex trap oil and moisture which prevent the skin from “breathing.” This can result in clogged pores and breakouts. Try wearing breathable cotton clothing if you are suffering from back acne, especially while or after working out.

Consider a salt water bath.

Epsom salt does not only relaxes your muscles. It can also soothe swollen skin and dries out oily patches in the skin. Also, try an oatmeal bath as it helps to remove excess oil on your skin. Just add a cup of Epsom salt or a half cup of plain unflavored oats to your bath water and soak for about 20 to 30 minutes.

Use an exfoliating product.

The pores on your back are larger and are inclined to clogging over the pores on your face. Back acne is usually triggered by pimples caused when dead skin cells and bacteria are trapped in a clogged pore. Try using body scrub 2 to 3 times a week to remove dead skin cells and clear clogged pores. Since the skin on your back is not as sensitive as the skin of your face, we still advice trying an exfoliating product.

Watch out for hair products.

avoid hair products with harsh chemicals

Some conditioners and other hair products can rub off on your face and back. This usually occurs during summertime when tank tops are common wear. Always use body wash or exfoliate after rinsing out conditioner in the shower. This will make sure that there is no thick residue from hair products stays on your skin.

Try changing your laundry detergent.

Scented products, including laundry detergent, can irritate your skin and cause back acne breakouts. If you are using acne treatments and your skin is not clearing up, try changing your scented products one by one and see if you can find the product that is causing your skin. Removing breakouts may be as simple as changing your fabric softener. Who knows?
